Photo Of The Day: 07/06/2011 "Water Revolution"
Walked absorbed in my thoughts, that walk the edge of the estuary. Fluffy clouds observed by decorating the blue of the sky. Suddenly at the height of my eyes, that painted ... "Clean Water for Life". How true I thought and I could not help remembering. How has it changed Bilbao in the last twenty years. I remember as a child, sometimes crossed in a boat which is popularly known as "Gasoline" right margin to left or vice versa. I used to entertain the few five-minute journey, leaning on one side and noticing how strange it seemed the water. It was rather a kind of thick mud, light gray to brown, with a strong smell of chemicals, which climbs up the nostrils and the pituitary was permeating even after we removed the water. They were years of greatness thanks to employment and wealth provided the industrial exploitation of heavy metals. However, for decades, neglected and abused natural heritage Nervión Basin. About 700 million euros and more than twenty years later, the project initiated by the Consorcio de Aguas Bilbao-Bizkaia, which was called the Comprehensive Sanitation Plan Ria de Bilbao, has succeeded in all sections of the channel oxygen levels exceed 60%.
Thanks to this initiative, life has returned to the estuary. To achieve this, we installed a network of collectors able to collect wastewater from the Greater Bilbao and move them to a treatment plant, located in Galindo, Sestao. Here we try to return them later reclaimed, to the river. Besides the water cleaning process, since 2001, we added a system of activated sludge biological treatment, which can eliminate 95% of the organic materials contained in wastewater. During the transformation, it generates about 300 tons per day of sludge, which are incinerated with the intention of generating electricity. After calcination, obtained 30 tons of ashes, which are reused to manufacture cemento.El plan has been complemented by the project Bilbao Ria 2000. After the industrial crisis of the 80's, most companies located on both banks of the river, were closed, reduced or even abandoned. It began to recover these valuable spaces, port activities were moved to the outer bay. Where once we found yards, mountains of containers, or high and blackened ovens, we can now enjoy walks, parks, museums, art galleries, outdoor ... New urban areas, where quality architecture becomes the protagonist.
We are witnessing a revolution that takes us from a purely industrial town, to an economic structure focused on culture, services and new technologies. So in this first centenary of the birth of The Picture of the day, we could not help but pay homage to this beautiful city we grew up and has managed to reinvent and adapt to the times.
